SS‑31 (Elamipretide) is a synthetic mitochondria‑targeted tetrapeptide (D‑Arg‑Dmt‑Lys‑Phe‑NH₂) engineered to selectively bind cardiolipin, a phospholipid essential for maintaining mitochondrial cristae structure, electron‑transport‑chain (ETC) integrity, and cellular bioenergetics.
